18/04/2005 Chief Minister discovers uniqueness of Hermannsburg Potters

During her visit to Ntaria, Chief Minister and Minister for Arts and
Museums Clare Martin visited the workshop of the world famous
Hermannsburg Potters.

"The potters of Hermannsburg are highly renowned. They have exhibited
around Australia, toured Europe and the United States. They have
become a Territory institution we should all be proud of,"
Ms Martin said.

The Chief Minister was shown around the workshop by founder and
director Naomi Sharp. Ms Sharp said the enterprise was established in
1990 and currently employs fifteen artists.

"The pottery business is the major private income-generating operation
in Hermannsburg. We also try to ensure the tradition will continue by
running a school-based training program in pottery for local young
people," Ms Sharp said.

“Aranda people like to learn and work in new things. My grandmother learnt to crochet for the church, my uncles learnt watercolour painting, my grandmother Clara was Albert Namatjira’s half sister (they had the same mother). And now, in this generation, we are first in pottery and we are traveling the world.”(Clara Ngal Inkamala)
