Artists

Hermannsburg Potters is owned and operated by a small group of Arrernte women born and raised in the area.   Some men have been included in the group over the years, but mainly they are women. Artists are from Arrernte country and some speak second and third indigenous languages or dialects. Most speak English as second language.  As a group, the women sit and work together daily, at the studio in Hermannsburg.  The youngest and newest member is around 40 years old, with some original members still making their best work in their later years. The more experienced artists teach the new artists and if they show promise and commitment, are accepted into the well-established group.

Artists directly benefit from their pot sales with a percentage of sales income going back into running their studio and promoting their work. Selling pots is a great motivation to supplement other income and gives the women independence and autonomy, a place to belong, working with others and to develop skills.
