Artists draw from the disciplines of ceramics, pottery, sculpture watercolour and drawing to develop new works and explore subject matter around them. The Centre is visited regularly by leading potters and specialists who help us develop our skills and studio practises.

To make a pot or urn, women often go on bush camps, visit country and sacred sites, and remember growing up learning knowledge of plants, animals, bush tucker and travel. Being inspired by the country is the essence of pots giving artists ideas for designs and subjects. Sometimes artists start by drawing and looking at landscapes thinking about what they want to do.

We've worked with potters in Papa New Guinea and Indonesia and love to learn new techniques and methods. Currently we are working with the Jam Factory to continually improve our techniques.

Pots are made by hand rolling out thin lines of clay, coiling them in a circular way and pinching the bands together. This is called the 'pinch pot' technique. When our pots are dry we burnish them with the back of a spoon to give them a finish. They are painted using undeglazes, which are fused to the pot when fired.
