Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney. We travelled a lot with choir. Then I retired, too much coughing. The last time i sang with the choir was at Ross River, when Morris was conductor. Then I left that choir. I sometimes help the choir for candle light time and funeral. The Desert choir went everywhere, Germany, America, they have travelled all around Australia. Alice Springs Desert Mob Show they sing too. Singing when they are sitting down on their knees, clapping and listening to conductor. Here on my pot is Areyonga choir, singing in the cave in Pitjantjatjara language. Aranda, Pitjantjatjara and English singing. Ntaria and Areyonga sing together - three languages, all singing together.

This work tells the story of the everyday practice of women in Ntaria collecting bush tucker, a cultural practice that still continues today. Bush tucker collecting is a women-only social practice, and the social and cultural aspect of bush tucker collecting is what is of most importance in present day Ntaria. The pre-contact practice of trading bush tucker however still continues, and women grow bush tucker in their yards, as well as travel out bush in Toyotas to source the various plant. The wily-wagtail, custodion of Palm Valley, the artist's traditional Country, is associated with the story of the two brothers Dreaming. The two brothers, one fat and one skinny, can be found in stone at Palm Valley, as well as their mother, who was punished for illegitimately viewing their initiation. We call ilpatjina 'long ears.' The word for 'ear' is 'ilpa' and donkeys are referred to as 'long ears' or ilpatjina. They came here with white people. There are lots over Areyonga way. (terracotta and underglazes, 8x8.5x22cm)

There was the old garden before next to the shop. Long time ago. People were working the in the garden and eating the vegetables and fruit from there. Cabbages, grapes, carrots, it had everything. We would go after school and pick and eat the fruit. (terracotta and underglazes, 14cm x 10cm)

Rraatninga (bush passionfruit or capparis spinosa) is found around Hermannsburg, and source of local bush tucker. (terracotta and underglazes, 9 x 9cm)

These two ladies are out there collecting bush medicine from this tree. They are grinding it up. The medicine is for rubbing on your skin when you feel pain. (terracotta and glazes, 20 x 8cm)

This is Ulpunda Outstation, my family's outstation. And you can see that cross up on the hill. We were staying there with my uncle and aunty and cousins. These houses are for different members of my family. There were horses in the yard. Long time ago I used to ride the horses. It was a long time ago we visited the outstation, before I had my kids. We are walking, looking for the grass with the little seeds to make Marna (food) flour. There are poeple sitting and talking, sitting around and rubbing the Puta (stone), making flour. You can see on the lid the same two people sitting and talking, rubbing the seeds to make flour. On this pot you can see Pluma Mapa (lots of flowers)! Urlpaatja (Parrot) is there too he lives in holes in the trees at night time. Ulpaatja Kara marra (parrot is good meat)! The little ones we likel Perentie is there too.. Kara marra again! you can see the kwaarra (little girl) satnding on puta (rock), watching the perentie and ulpaatja. Pmurlpa (Quandong) marna marra (good food)! They are all falling on the ground. You can see arrkutja picking them up. We pick them up and put into the coolemon to take back to pmere (home).

This is at Ntjartnama (my outstation) where I went hunting for Ngurrlpa (pitchery/ bush tobbacco) and I ran into these birds. Plus I was looking for parkillya (wild flower) to make a little flower garden for me. They are the purple little flowers with white in the middle. That’s how I ran into these birds. I came back the next day and I started drawing and painting what I see.
